Universitas Negeri Gorontalo (UNG) is a university that was developed based on the wider mandate of IKIP Negeri Gorontalo. The existence of Universitas Negeri Gorontalo began with the Junior College of Teacher Training and Education of the University of North-Central Sulawesi (UNSULUTTENG) Manado in Gorontalo based on the decree of the UNSULUTTENG Rector Number 1313/II/E/63 dated June 22, 1963, the UNSULUTTENG FKIP Branch in Gorontalo based on the Decree of the Minister of PTIP number 67 of 1963 dated July 11, 1963, the Gorontalo Branch of IKIP Manado based on the Decree of the Minister of PTIP Number 114 of 1965 dated June 18, 1965, the FKIP UNSRAT Manado in Gorontalo based on Presidential Decree number 70 of 1982 dated September 7, 1982, the Gorontalo STKIP based on the RI Presidential Decree number 9 of 1993 dated January 16, 1993, the Gorontalo State IKIP based on the RI Presidential Decree number 19 of 2001 dated February 5. 2001.

The change of IKIP Negeri Gorontalo to Universitas Negeri Gorontalo was stipulated by the Decree of the President of the Republic of Indonesia Number 54 of 2004 dated June 23, 2004. The birthday of UNG was set to be the same as the birth of the FKIP UNSULUTTENG branch in Gorontalo, namely, September 1, 1963 as stated in the decree of the Minister of PTIP Number 67 of 1963 dated July 11, 1963. In its 50-year journey, it has experienced seven changes in leadership and six changes in the name of the institution.

Logo Description

1. The equilateral pentagon curve is a typical ornament of the Gorontalo region, symbolizing the five principles of the Pancasila state philosophy which are the principles of UNG, as well as the five pillars of Gorontalo civilization called {Payu Limo to Talu, Lipu Pei Hulalu}
2. The lotus flower frame that has fully bloomed contains the hope that UNG will produce complete and quality human resources.
3. The globe circle symbolizes the commitment to achieving the vision, mission and goals of UNG, while the blue color symbolizes security and peace.
4. An open white book has the meaning of an open attitude and high enthusiasm for developing science, technology, and arts and culture.
5. The pen in the form of a five-pointed ornament symbolizes that religious knowledge, science, technology, art and culture are a unified whole in the world of education.
6. The black king's crown with golden yellow decoration symbolizes culture, steadfastness and glory of a dignity. 23 gold grains symbolize the historic day of the Gorontalo people, where January 23, 1942 is the independence day of the Gorontalo people and also June 23, 2004 is the inauguration day of UNG by the President of the Republic of Indonesia.
7. The orange wings of the Maleo bird symbolize the high fighting spirit and dynamic movements of the academic community in developing UNG.
